Language register

my magazine will use a semi-formal register. But it will include some swearing, this may be due to using quotes from a band or a singer. As alternative bands are now on the rise and there is now a vast number of them this tone may make some of the newer bands feel like they are being taken seriously and the readers and the bands would respond positively to this. So I may base my register off of magazines like the Rolling Stone, NME and Kerrang.

Audience research

UK Tribes:
Young Alts:
"Young Alts are the Tribe for young people who ‘want out’ of the mainstream. It’s an entry-level Tribe, with equal split between the sexes, and members share an inquisitiveness for everything Alternative – from Grunge to Hardcore."

Hardcore:
"Though Hardcore is a new addition to UK Tribes (it’s only recently regained sufficient momentum to genuinely warrant inclusion), this Tribe has its roots in the punk rock scene, originating in LA in the late 1970s. California’s Black Flag are often referred to as the godfathers of Hardcore.

The ethos of the Tribe resolves around two core values – self-expression and individuality. Hardcore Kids are passionate about the Hardcore sound, a screaming genre of punk with severe tempo changes, double bass in the drums, and dirty chords from the guitarists (heavily distorted, tapping into any feedback and harmonic noises available!)  Tribe members will actively support independent record shops and local, homegrown bands."

Indie scenesters:
"Indie Scenesters are dedicated to finding the newest music, exploring all avenues to get there – online, print, record shops, club nights and word of mouth. Staying ahead of the curve is a must, but it’s borne out of a genuine love for music – and this is what separates them from those more fickle dabblers and dilettantes, the Hipsters. For Indie Scenesters, there’s nothing better than discovering new artists and spreading the love.
Guitar music has seen its cool usurped by the rise in electronic-synth based music in recent years, and Indie Scenesters have broadened their musical tastes as a result. It’s no longer just about indie rock bands like Vampire Weekend – Indie Scenesters have embraced experimental, genre-blending artists like Four Tet. Yet, the Indie Scenester approach remains the same – it’s about championing independent artists rather than a specific genre, especially before the masses get in on the act."

Photographer research

Terry Richardson:
American fashion and portrait photographer, who has done work for magazines such as Rolling Stone, GQ, Vogue, Vanity Fair, I-D and Vice. Most of his photographs are against a white background and this makes the subject stand out more against it, this will be good to use on a cover as it would make a subject or multiple subjects attention grabbing on it.

Rankin:
British fashion and portrait photographer. Photos in colour and black and white against a single colour background making the subject stand out, mostly close ups and mid shots but can really make the subject stand out.

Tony Kelly:
Irish fashion photographer, his work has been published in Vanity Fair, Vogue, Playboy, GQ and many other magazines. His work is quite colorful and bright, using quite a bit of color in his photos may be to catch the eye, and they are bright in that you can see the shine on the skin of the models, this may also to bring attention to them.

1 Hour magazine cover

I have used a picture of Royal Blood on my front cover as they are a band that I'm quite interested in.

I chose the title Rockwrok as it relates to the genre of music the band play and I feel the font represents this as well.

Added a bar code in the bottom left corner, this is a usual place for a bar code and fits on the cover quite well.

I put the price, issue number and month of the magazine on top of the bar code in the left corner because usually this information is near the bar code and anywhere else it would make the cover look untidy.

on this final version of the magazine I added the band name to make sure they were recognizable and made it red to make it stand out.

Update

Organisation and time management:
It has taken a while to get used to the schedule, so I have had to make more time to do this work outside of lessons and apply myself more to what I'm doing

Research and planning:
From this I have looked at a number of different music magazines and from these I have learned a lot about the terms used on specific items and about the presentation of information with the center of visual interest. Now I feel that I could replicate a cover relatively well, but a double page spread may be tricky.

Technology:
With what we are using I am still the most comfortable using word for most tasks, and I am getting used to using Photoshop now and am becoming more familiar with it.

Audience profile

My audience profile is on Luke Colthart who is 17 and a year 13 student at Lutterworth College. Luke is unemployed. Luke's music taste is mostly alternative and rock listening to bands like Imagine Dragons, Foster the people, Fall out boy, Arctic Monkeys, Royal Blood and the Wombats, this music genre is what I'm trying to appeal as my magazine will cover rock and alternative and he is in the age range I'm going to aim at being between 16-25. So he should be interested in what my magazine would offer.

Style of magazine

The style of magazine I am looking to create is based on the rock and alternative genres I have chosen these as it is the area of music I am the most into so I feel like I'd know what I'm doing with these genres.
I am gong to base the style of the magazine on NME with a relatively simple design that really shows of the artist on the cover.

25 word pitch

I want to create a rock/alternative magazine aimed at 16-25 year olds, offering something new different and interesting, for where I believe there is a gap in the market.

Analysis of institution

Bauer:
part of the Bauer media group which is a large European based media company. They manage more than 600 magazines, over 400 digital products and 50 radio and TV stations around the world, with employees in 17 countries. Publishing magazines such as Q and Kerrang.

IPC:
Now Time Inc UK this institution is a consumer magazine and digital publisher in the UK. They own NME, so they don't own many music magazines and this may give me more of a chance for this company to possibly publish my magazine as it would be an area they have not really covered.

Analysis of Magazine titles

NME magazines title is always in bold capital letters in the top left of the page so it stands out, the colour of the title may vary from time to time depending on the cover so it stands out more and is still easily visible, the same could be said for Q magazine. Rolling Stone magazine has its title in the top center of the page in large red letters, it is quite an old reputable magazine and people can easily recognize the title. Kerrangs title is also top center, but the font gives it the more hardcore look with cracks in the font and looks like it suits the genre. Vibe, Clash and Wire all have rather similar titles just being one word and quite similar fonts as well but each still look right for the genre they cover.
