 5. How did you attract/address your audience?

I tried to attract my audience by styling it off of magazines like Kerrang which was already reaching the audience I intended to be for my magazine, the way I did this was by trying to take elements from the existing magazine and trying to implement them into mine, mostly I tried to do this with the cover as that is what would draw in the people I wanted to, so I had to make it appeal to them and the usual magazine conventions for the rock genre are to have a large bold masthead with a signature font that people will associate with it.

Also the artists I used in the magazine were reasonably stylised to fit the genre of music and draw in the audience for that music, if they see the artists on the cover and instantly assume what genre the magazine is and what kind of content it will have in it.

The way I have decided to address my audience is through the language register that I have used, this being a more informal register this could also appeal to my audience as this shows it is not a generic music magazine that doesn’t care about the music, so the text in the magazine shows feeling and this is the kind of devotion that my audience may like to see in a music magazine.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

For my music artists I tried to base them off of other artists such as Paramore and Pretty Reckless in the way of style in that the lead is a woman and the backing musician are men. The clothes the men are wearing are similar as they are just wearing dark T-shirts and jeans the same as my male models and the women are wearing the same shade red lipstick that makes them stand out from the males, but Hayley Williams is wearing more make up like heavy eyeliner while my model is not and I could have used this on my model to make her more stylised to the genre of music I am trying to target. Differences with the male models are that they look a bit too clean cut for what I am trying to achieve.  There is also a visible lack of tattoos, something that is commonly associated with this genre and my intended audience. Other differences include the expressions on the model’s faces. My models are smiling, whereas the Paramore members have a serious expression which conveys a more dedicated approach to their music.

Through the style research in the first stage of this project I was able to get some examples of how my audiences style came across and applied a small amount to my models as I did not have the resources to style them fully, more makeup could have been added to my woman model and darker clothes and maybe something leather and for my male model he could have been wearing just a T-shirt without the hoodie and put some fake tattoos on him to give him more of an edgy look, if he also had some facial hair this could have made the look a bit better too. I also used UK tribes as a way to see the style of my audience, how they dressed what their other interests are, so I could have got a bit of influence from those parts of the audience as well. My main audiences from UK tribes would be the Hard core and Young Alts as they are interested in the types of music my magazine would have in it.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience I intend my media product to appeal to is more the rock side of my audience and this is because I have included bands in the contents and on the front page that people more interested in this genre would be interested in. If my magazine reaches this area I think it would do well as most magazines containing or focusing on this genre are widely shared and appreciated by the members of that group.

An example of the audience I am trying to reach would be Dan Mellar, he is in full time education, plays the guitar and has been into rock music for a long time favouring older bands but still liking newer rock bands that are emerging, bands he is into include Royal Blood, Pretty Reckless, Metallica, Bring Me The Horizon and others similar to these bands and this is the audience I am trying to appeal to so I think Dan would be interested in what my magazine has to offer. He is also in the age range I am catering more towards that being 16-30 as I believe this is an age range of the people most devoted to following music especially my genre.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Bauer:

Bauer Media is a division of the Bauer Media Group, Europe’s largest privately owned publishing Group. The Group is a worldwide media empire offering over 300 magazines in 15 countries, as well as online, TV and radio stations. Bauer Media is a multi-platform UK-based media Group consisting of many companies collected around two main divisions – Magazines and Radio - widely recognised and rewarded as being industry innovators.

Bauer could distribute my magazine on a large scale through the UK and possibly internationally, as Bauer already publishes Kerrang if it published my magazine it may be able to reach more of that audience and offer an alternative to Kerrang. This may also corner the market on these types of magazines and ultimately dominate the genre.

Draft Evaluations

  1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (I.e. of music magazines)

When making my magazine I was largely influenced by Kerrang and NME, these magazines are probably the closest to the genre of music (Rock/Alternative) I was looking to focus on and stylistically I have tried to model aspect of my magazine off of them.

The masthead of my magazine ‘Grizzly’ I used the font ‘right brew’ which was downloaded from DaFont.com. The font is large and a bit distorted; I chose the distortion so the text would seem grimy and this could show that the magazine isn't all that clean cut and has more than just the regular charts music, and maybe appeal to the rock audience more. Through the title itself ‘Grizzly’ I was trying to make a powerful title and make it have the impression that it's something big, hard-hitting and just different.

The graphology of my front cover is quite simple with a large central image taking up the whole cover with the headline lower down the page as not to distract to much from the image, but bright enough to be seen and read clearly. The contents page has been set out so the main article of the magazine is in clear view and central on the page and the other content has large headings so is easy to see.For the double page spread I used the intermediate page layout to find the main points of interest on the page and tried to put the key parts of the images and text inside the rectangles for the best effect.

The models/ music artists ‘Fresh Terror’ have been stylised in the photo shoot for my magazine, the artists were generally stylised to be wearing darker colours to give the more secluded rock look rather than a bright indie style like most artists now. In the previous photo shoot the models were not wearing much stylised clothes to give the look that they are actually in a rock band rather than just kids on the street. The style most rock bands go for is the just generic dark colours that don’t stand out all that much and mostly their own merchandise and I have tried to get this to show in my photos and I feel this fits the genre and style of my magazine, they do not look fake or out of place, they look like they should be there.
